The majority of Dawoodi Bohras, we believe, are progressive-minded. Theyre fed up with the way the affairs of our community are managed but do not dare to speak about it, for obvious reasons. They are the silent majority. In comparison, the people who have come out openly to challenge the Kothar may be small in number but are not wanting in commitment, courage and perseverance. An overview... Central Board of Dawoodi Bohra Community, The CBDBC is the worldwide umbrella organisation of porgoressie Bohras and all reformist jamaats are affiliated to it. Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat, Udaipur, For more than 25 years the Udaipur jamaat is functioning independent of the Kothar. The jamaat is completely accountable to the people, and its office bearers are democratically elected. Association of Progressive Dawoodi Bohras of Ontario, The Progressive Bohras of Ontario, Canada, have organised themselves into a caring and committed community and are at the forefront of the reformist cause in North America. Welcome to the cyberhome of progressive Dawoodi Bohras. We are engaged in a struggle to bring about social reform in the community. We challenge the authoritarian ways of the priesthood and not the religious authority of the Dai (high priest). Our struggle is rooted in the Islamic ideals of justice and accountability, and it is our conviction that theres more to being a Dawoodi Bohra than most of us have been led to believe. Our aim is not merely to lay bare the corruption of the priesthood but also to remind ourselves of what our true history is and how it is being destroyed. However, its not just our history, our religion and our way of life thats under attack. Common people and common resources everywhere are daily being laid waste by big corporations, self-centered ruling classes and obscurantist despots. Our world is beset with problems, problems that are as intractable as they are complex and overwhelming. But then, where theres cruelty and unreason theres also compassion and intellect. And, not to forget that the human spirit, untamed by centuries of oppression, is always our steadfast ally. Its not for nothing that people continue to fight for their rights in the face of tremendous odds and at the cost of unimaginable personal sacrifice. We are of the belief that though our struggle is unique in many ways, it is yet intertwined with other peoples struggle for peace, justice and dignity. Only by relating to larger struggles around us we can strengthen our commitment to our shared ideals. This website has in the past only occasionaly focused on issues that have little to do with the wider world. In the coming months though we hope to also increasingly train a spotlight on issues and events that shape our lives and our world.
