Delegation of the European Commission to Pakistan, with data on EU-Pakistani trade, and information about cooperation between the two entities. Diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Community were established in 1962. The EC- Pakistan Commercial Cooperation Agreement dates from 1976, followed in 1986 by a Commercial and Cooperation Agreement valid for five years, with annual extensions by tacit agreement ever since. Commercial, Economic and Development Cooperation have known a dynamic evolution under these Agreements. Since the Lisbon EU Summit in 1992, the instrument of Political Dialogue has been instituted between Pakistan and European Union. The European Commission, which is the executive body of the European Union, is represented by Delegations in 128 countries around the world. A Commission office was opened in Islamabad in 1985. This office was upgraded to a Delegation with full diplomatic status in 1988. The Head of Delegation is formally accredited as Ambassador to the Head of State of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The Delegation monitors EC-Pakistan trade issues as well as regional cooperation. It manages EC-financed development aid and economic cooperation activities in Pakistan. It coordinates EC-financed humanitarian aid projects to assist Afghan refugees in Pakistan and to support their rehabilitation to, and reintegration in, Afghanistan. It provides information about the European Community and its Institutions. Finally, in association with the Presidency of the European Union and the Embassies of the other Member States of the Union, the Delegation plays an active role in the Unions political relations with the Government of Pakistan.
