Pakistan Institute of Development Economics in Pakistan Directory

Pakistan Institute of Development Economics was established at Karachi in 1957 and in 1964 accorded the status of an autonomous research organization by the Government of Pakistan. It is devoted to theoretical and empirical research in Development Economics in general and on Pakistan-related economic issues in particular. In addition to providing a firm academic basis to economic policy-making, its research also provides a window through which the outside world can view the nature and direction of economic research in Pakistan. Other social sciences, such as demography and anthropology and interdisciplinary studies increasingly define the widening scope of research that must be undertaken for proper economic policy and development to have sound underpinnings. Experts at PIDE undertake their projects as part of the annual research agenda under intra-institutional or collaborative arrangements with several national and international organizations. Current areas of emphasis are economic issues, development studies, social issues, agricultural and physical sciences, environment and natural resources. Profile, PIDE is located at the Quaid-i-Azam University Campus in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. The campus rests against the backdrop of the Margalla hills on the Potohar Plateau, within a short distance of the remains of Taxila, which once housed the worlds oldest university. Archaeological remains discovered in this area show that it has been a center of civilization for some 5,000 years. The Institute, neighbor to several other academic outfits situated in this historic and scenic part of the green foothills of the great South Asian mountain ranges, is the hub of economic and social science research in this part of the world. The overall administrative control of PIDE vests in the Board of Governors, chaired ex-officio by the Deputy Chairperson of the Planning Commission of Pakistan. Council of Senior Fellows consists of 15 members and is headed by the Vice Chancellor. The Council assists the Institute in formulating and carrying out its research, training, publications and other professional functions. The advice of PIDEs International Advisory Board is also sought on various aspects of the Institutes academic activities. This Board comprises outstanding scholars (including Nobel Laureates) in the fields of Economics, Demography and Anthropology. Our Mission, Besides research and advisory functions, imparting knowledge and training in the relevant fields has also been an important commitment. Courses are regularly offered to officials in government ministries and members of non-governmental organizations for further training in economic and demographic analysis, research methods and project evaluation. To meet the growing demand for advanced training in Economics particularly, PIDE has started Ph.D. Program in this subject in September, 2000. As both academic and public responsibilities converge closely at this social sciences institution, a strong research publication program is a necessity for the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge. The program has performed this function for several decades. It comprises an international quarterly journal, The Pakistan Development Review and books and monograph series and research reports subscribed the world over. The Institute also acts as a country-wide agency for conducting and promoting research, surveys, seminars, experiments and demonstrations in the fields of Economics, Demography, Social Anthropology and related social science disciplines. By encouraging, sponsoring and participating in these activities leading to the much-needed wider spread of knowledge and education, the Institute expects to help in the process of better decision-making, appropriate development and improvement in the quality of life of the people of Pakistan and other developing countries.
